Accommodation in Tarangire National Park

Budget campsites - $

There are two basic campsites close to Tarangire where you can pitch your own tent. Wild Palm Campsite (075 8439799) is run down with no facilities, but has its charm. Sure you will be the only camper, giving you ultimate privacy and chance to appreciate the silence. Bring your own food. Zion Campsite (0765870079) is another campsite next to the gate. It has better facilities, with designated area for cooking and dinging. You can order basic meals at the canteen. Both campsites are plotted in Tracks4Africa.

Whistling Thorn - $$

Whistling Thorn is a budget nature camp, with only six tents managed by friendly local staff from the nearby Maasai villages. Accommodation is in spacious safari tents with en suite bathroom. US$ 172 / dbl / HB. From the camp, it is a 30 minute ride to Tarangire Park.

New Karibuni Lodge - $

Karibuni is a small guesthouse in Lushoto town. It is set in an old colonial house run by a charismatic Scandinavian lady. The vibe is homely and very reggae. Every Wednesday and Saturday is jam night with bonfire. Homed cooked meals can be provided if ordered in advance. Tsh 50,000 dbl / BB.

Swiss Cottage Farm - $

This is another peaceful retreat set on a working farm in Magamba Forest area. The family house is especially lovely, with wooden furniture, kitchen, and very Swiss design with an amazing view over the green rocky hills and bright gardens. $35-$50pp / BB.

Mambo Viewpoint Eco Lodge - $$

If you go to the Northern Usambaras, stay in either Mambo Viewpoint Eco Lodge or the adjacent cheapy sister Mambo Cliff Inn, both situated on a cliff at an altitude of 1,900m on the outskirts of Mambo village.

Morogoro, New Acropol Hotel - $

We are not sure why the new addition to the Acropol Hotel, as it is set in a former sisal estate manager’s house, dating from the colonial era. The interior is jammed with curios from Zanzibar and personal belongings of the charismatic Canadian owner. Food is excellent and excessive. Prices are a bargain and great deal at Tsh 65,000 dbl / BB

Udzungwa Forest Camp - $$

Known as Honda Honda camp, this friendly camp is located on a large private area bordering the tropical forested slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains. There is a choice of staying in comfortable tented rooms ( $108 dbl / BB), basic traditional thatched bandas ($ 32 dbl / BB) or pitching your own tent.

The park bandas are the only affordable options (except for camping) when you want to stay inside Ruaha National Park. The accommodations are basic but the scenery is luxurious. Prices for the park bandas vary from US$ 20 to US$ 50 per person.

Tungamalenga Lodge and Camping Is located 35 km of the Ruaha National Park gate in Tungamalenga village. Tungamalenga offers African Banda Cottages, each with its own en suite bathroom and balcony. The set up is a bit crowded, giving the place a backpacker’s feel. Prices are US$ 10 per person for camping and US$ 60 for a double cottage.
